Another exciting day at Pocono Wildlife! A new baby beaver has arrived all the way from Massachusetts to come be friends with our little buddy Timber!
Timber came to us after a couple from Lansdale came upon him while kayaking. The little fella walked right up to them and was clearly in need of a helping hand. Since he arrived, he’s been the only beaver at Pocono Wildlife.
Fortunately, our friends up at Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford, MA also had a lonely little baby beaver, Darla, who was looking for a companion to grow up with. So we hatched our plan to introduce the two in a mere few days.
So our property manager, Frank Menyhart, got to work doing what he does best – building homes for animals in need! In the short 3 days we had to prepare for Darla’s arrival, Frank put together a whole new dedicated beaver enclosure and he’s got even more plans for the future: “In the next couple of weeks, what we’re going to do still is put cement board on top and hydraulic cement coating so it’s absolutely waterproof and no wood will be exposed because they like to chew on it, but they’re still very small so at this time it is not a concern.”
Our own Kat Schuster and Newhouse Wildlife Rescue’s Jane Newhouse agreed that this is a wonderful match that couldn’t happen soon enough.
“They are a very family oriented animal. Darla’s a little bit bigger, but It’s two singles, they are much better together,” Kat said.
“Them having each other will definitely help the chances of a successful rehabilitation. and help with less of a chance of habituation, less of a chance of them getting used to people, said Jane.”
These little beavers are going to be with us for 2 whole years while they grow into not-so-little beavers that are ready to make their way in the wild. We’ve got grand plans for building more outdoor accomodations for them, such as a big pond in which they can dive and build. If you’d like to help support us in our construction efforts for these adorable animals, please head over to our Donate Now page, we’d appreciate it immensely!
